Over the last 10 years, Faurecia has contributed to the reduction of pollutant emissions by supplying carmakers with forward-looking solutions in emissions control as well as acoustic treatment, weight reduction and energy heat recovery.
As air quality becomes a major concern for cities in particular, regulations are increasing the need for electrification and new technologies. In this context, Faurecia Clean Mobility (formerly Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies) is adapting its strategy to focus on three key areas:
- New technologies for a more efficient and responsible use of thermal and hybrid cars, integrating high-tech systems such as energy recovery and monitoring of real-time data.
- Developing breakthrough innovations for the rapidly growing commercial vehicle market as well as the global off-highway and high-horsepower engine market, including marine and power generation.
- Leveraging its expertise to develop innovative solutions to accompany the growth of electric vehicles, with a focus on lightweight solutions including composites and battery thermal management.
Faurecia Clean Mobility is mobilizing its know-how to meet more stringent environmental standards while responding to the public’s growing ecological concerns. Its added value for automakers is its ability to propose a comprehensive portfolio of solutions:
Faurecia Clean Mobility has strengthened its position as a leader in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to curb nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. Its innovative close-coupled SCR BlueBox® compact mixer technology is now part of the exhaust system for the 2.0-liter Ford Transit. The technology eliminates up to 95% of engine NOx emissions, ensuring compatibility with Euro 6c standards in 2017 and Euro 6d requirements for 2020.
As part of its range of cutting-edge NOx reduction technologies, Faurecia Clean Mobility this year marketed a new Ammonia Storage and Delivery System (ASDS™) developed by its subsidiary Amminex, which stores ammonia as a solid and releases it into the exhaust stream as a gas. The technology has proven highly effective, reducing NOx emissions from diesel-powered city buses by up to 99%. Faurecia has already adapted the technology to private cars and vans, and is now exploring other ASDS™ applications for agricultural and earthmoving machinery, as well as the high-horsepower engines used in motorboats and marine propulsion.
The Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) developed by Faurecia Clean Mobility can capture up to 75% of the energy typically lost as heat through the exhaust system to warm the cabin and engine more quickly. EHRS technology can cut CO2 emissions from hybrid vehicles by three grams per kilometer and achieve fuel savings of up to 7%. The compact EHRS unveiled this year on the high-performance Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and plug-in Hybrid reduces fuel consumption by a further 3%.
Faurecia's Exhaust Heat Power Generation (EHPG) converts the heat from exhaust gas into electricity or mechanical power to drive the wheels, based on the Rankine cycle. EHPG can reduce the fuel consumption of cars and trucks by at least 5%. Manufacturers have already shown an interest in the system.
To help automakers meet their targets in reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Faurecia Clean Mobility continues to develop innovations designed to shed weight from cold-end exhaust components. One example is Faurecia's proprietary nickel brazing technology, which can be used to assemble cold-end components that are less than 1 mm in width.
Other innovations are in the pipeline to maintain the sound absorption performance of lighter, more slimline mufflers.
Composite expertise is another pillar of Faurecia's weight-reduction program. Composite materials are made from resins melded with reinforcing fibers and give automakers another way to improve fuel efficiency.
Faurecia's strategy is twofold: reduce the weight of vehicles while controlling production costs. The Group aims to develop materials, processes and products that can later be mass manufactured. That means applying expertise gleaned from high-performance sports cars to adapt products and processes to high-volume programs.
Faurecia is stepping up its efforts to achieve further weight reductions to set the standard in structural and semi-structural carbon fiber parts for high-volume manufacturing. Faurecia is a member of the FORCE consortium, a group of stakeholders in the carbon-fiber market that is seeking to open up the technology to all automakers.
The Group aims to actively shape an automotive industry that is trending toward electric and driverless cars by pioneering composite applications for such vehicles, which are set to become an increasingly common sight on our roads.

Faurecia Clean Mobility continues to develop its new generation of electric valves to rise to manufacturer expectations in terms of durability and temperature resistance.
Faurecia will now equip the Honda NSX with its electric actuated valve, building on its established expertise in acoustic treatment for exhaust systems. The solution already features on cars made by FIAT-Chrysler, Ford, Mercedes, Volvo, and VW Group. A key advantage of the technology is the ability to fine-tune the vehicle’s sound signature.
Faurecia Clean Mobility won the 2016 Automotive News PACE Award for its Adaptive Valve™ technology. The self-actuated valve is triggered by exhaust gases and works in conjunction with the muffler to reduce tailpipe noise. The technology makes a significant contribution to weight savings, reducing muffler volume by 30% and shaving 20% off the weight of the exhaust system, without compromising engine performance. Faurecia's valve currently features on a number of pickups and SUVs in North America.
For the past few years, Faurecia has been developing Exhaust Dynamic Sound Technologies (EDST) that allow automakers to give vehicles their own voice.
EDST can recreate and customize the sound signature of vehicles powered by high-performance gasoline and diesel engines while eliminating unwanted noise at low rpm. The system strikes the perfect balance between driving pleasure and acoustic comfort
Faurecia Clean Mobility continues to actively support environmental standards worldwide, partnering with two headline events on air quality in South Korea this year: the World Clean Air Congress organized by the International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA) and the Better Air Quality conference hosted by the NGO Clean Air Asia. Faurecia plans to continue delivering the expertise and emissions control technologies needed to remain at the forefront of the drive to improve air quality.
